Amrita Shergil

Amrita Shergil was been in 1913. Her father was Sikh and her mother was from Hungry. In the beginning she studied in European and got a special place in portrait in oil in western style. She painted quite freely with originality and progressive nature in her art. She propounded a new style of painting with the combination of western modern art with that of Indian art. She had a great talent and visited different European art museums and started a new style of painting after being inspired by latest style of that place. The main affection style was of Cezanne and Gaugin learned the artists of new Imperialistic style. She learned the solidity of nature from Cezanne but Gaugin taught her how to use the Indian colors in a dramatic way and got a new modern style developed with Indian character.

She came to Indian in1934 and was inspired by Ajanta art and painted the rural life in her own style but was not popularized. The character of Indian that we see in her paintings is not found in the paintings of other Indian artists red clay elephant is one of her last painting life.
