BENGAL SCHOOL OF PAINTING
Even after long britishers could not developed western art of painting in India. It came to an end with Raja Ravi Verma by the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century. But F.B. Haveell brought new style of paintings in India. He was the principal of Madras school of art in 1884 to 1896 and later transferred to Calcutta. Being a ral teacher an ordent art critic inspite of being a Britisher he said forceful method of introducing western art was wrong because there can be only a little change in the basic style of an art and total change is not possible.
He gave a constructed shape of this discussion at Calcutta by introducing Avindernath Tagore. A leading artist of India with whose help and effort a new school of painting was established with in 10years based on Indian tradition known as Bengal School. Many people condemned and criticized Mr. Havell but he proved his greatness by not following the dirty politics of Britishers.
A group of Bengal artists gave birth to a new traditional painting style after copying the painting of Mugal, Rajput and Ajanta etc. and created a Renaissance under the guidance and headship of Avindernath Tagore.
By doing this they saw the seeds of Indian traditions fresh among the Indian artist and succeeded.
In 1907, Havell and Gajendra Nath thakur found the Indian society of oriental art whose aim was to encourage traditional paintings and progress artists there were 30 Britishers and 5 Indian in this organization and the director was Lord Kitchenar. In 1908 an exhibition of painting of Avinder Nath Tagore and Nand Lal Bose, G.N. Thakur etc. were exhibited and Shri Parsi Brown. John woodruffs, N.C.Mehta, O.C. Ganguli encourage artists.
In the same time Haringhem came to India and got paintings of Ajanta copied by Nand Lal Bose, Asit Kumar Halderand K.Vanktappa etc. were published them in Indian society, London. The paintings of Bagh caves were also copied. Eshwari Prasad of Patna school painted religious themes and Anand Kumar Swami arrange several exhibitions of Indian paintings in foreign countries obtaining respect and fame. This Renaissance of Indian art spread every corner of the country started from Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Punjab, Gujrat. Lucknow and Hyderabad etc. Devi Prasad, Roy Choudhary, Abdul Rehman, Chugtai, Yamini Rai, asit Kumar Halder, ravi Shankar rawal, Sharda Charen Ukil, Amrita Shergil did different experiment in foreign techniques with Indian tradition.
Wash technique, a foreign one was suicide at Bombay. But the above gave birth to a new style of paintings by the integration of Indian and foreign art which was quite Indian in character.
After Renaissance western art did have an effect of Indian paintings as a desire to learn every new technique came up in the heart’s artist. The effect of European movement was eminent; Impressionism, Post-impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, secularism and new experiment like Neo-primitivism etc. had definite effect on Indian paintings.
