Cocncepts of Elephana cavs

The concept of Elephanta is geometric and symmetrical plan. The 2 most significant focal points in the cave- the linga and the eternal Siva are geometrically related. Two concentric circles (with their centers same), determine the position of the linga in the center of the sanctuary on the East-West axis and the eternal 3-headed Siva image on the south wall (both with guardian figures). The heads of Siva image are deeply recessed into the wall. There is an implication of a 4th unseen head. The circle and the north-south axis meet at a point coinciding with the center of the 4 heads, almost at the back wall of the niche.

The three staircases at the east, north and west entrances are the furthermost extensions of the plan. The center of the mandala, the position of columns, walls, staircases and the two focal points of the interior (linga and eternal Siva) are related.
The movement along the North to South axis is the movement from light to darkness, the devotee goes deeper and deeper into the cave towards the eternal Siva. One feels the surroundings of darkness as he approaches the eternal Siva.
The walls and ceilings are undecorated, only the columns are carved. The richly carved panels dominate the whole wall, covering the undecorated walls. The panels are deeply carved and framed strongly.
