Khajuraho

The temples of Khajuraho can be divided into two groups according to the manipulation of erotic motifs in art.

The first group comprise the shrines built in the period 950-1050 A.D, includes- Lakshmana, Parsvanath, Vishvanath, Devi Jagdamba Chitragupta and Kandariya.
The second group, shaped in the period 1050-1150 A.D, includes- Vamana, Adinath, Javeri, Chaturbhuja and Duladeva.
The temples of the first group built in the palmy days of Chandella dynasty when Khajuraho was a capital city display sex richly, whereas the shrines completed in the decadent phase of the Chandella school are less likely to sexual representation.

Erotic images are seen all around India in the period of 900-1400 A.D. It is so abundant and projecting on the temples, that it could have hardly escaped the eyes of devotees and pilgrims.
The Shilpshastras, Vastushastras and other texts objectifing rules of sculpture and architecture written after the Gupta period, refer to the copy of erotic figures on doors and other architectural parts of religious monuments.
Sexual expressions has been interpreted as the symbolic representation of the unbounded bliss or the overt display of Kama.
The acceptance or rejection of views (whether the erotics are placed in the interior and on the garbhagriha walls etc.) should be based on the observation of sculptures.
