PRE-BUDDHA PERIOD
JogiMara Caves: - all these paintings that were done before Ajanta, Bagh etc. come under Pre-Buddha period. Though nothing special but Jogimara caves can be called best in that period.
Jogimara caves are situated at Amarnath near the region of Narmada in sarguja state in M.P. This pilgrimage is situated on the Ramgarh hills and was painted in 300 B.C. This cave is 10 feet x 6 feet x 6 feet with a very small gate. Here animals, birds, human being and flowers are painted mostly in black, red and white color.
Paintings of Jogimara caves
There are seven paintings on the root of this caves in which human figures, fish and elephant are painted (1) Some person are sitting under a tree, (2) A couple is dancing over a lily flower, (3) A image like a doll which is not clear at all, (4) A painting of a female dance sitting around her singers and dancers are dancing. This painting resembles with Ajanta, (5) & (6) are not clear but seem to be of chariots.
Importance of Jogimara caves paintings
(1) Paintings have been executed on the white base plaster by line.
(2) Black, red, white and yellow colors have been used.
(3) Outlines are in red.
(4) At places paintings has been done on the rough surface without pre-paring them.
(5) There are two layers of painting in it. Original painting are of expert artist but the upper layer has been done by in competent artist.
(6) Subject matter of the painting is not clear.
(7) There is no religious matter like Ajanta.
(8) It is a inigue example of the ancient painting.
(9) It seems to be the first human Endeavour towards painting.
Mention of paintings in Ancient Liteature
Paintings of that time was not of a high standerd. But we find some mention of a very high class art of paintings in the ancient literature of that time. The known art of painting is no comparison to that Vishwakarma was also known as the first and the greatest artist of that time. He was a specialist in craftsmanship and architecture. There are also painting in Ramayana and Mahabharata, Natyashastra, Meghdoot and Raghvansha, Kamasutra. Six limbs described in Kamasutra are:-
(1) Roopbheda:- knowledge of form or form impact.
(2) Pramana- proportion.
(3) Bhava- expression.
(4) Lavanya Yojana- Aesthetic.
(5) Sadrashya- Similitude.
(6) Varnikabhanya-Color scheme.
