BHEEM BHETKA CAVES
These caves are situated near Bhopal one railway station named Ubedullaganj in Hoshanga-bad and Bhopal. These caves are more 600 in number and spread over an area of 10sq.kms. There are 475 painted caves in them. Only 10 caves have yet been executed and this work will continue for years to come. Here some edged tools dated as back as 300000-100000 B.C. of Paleolithic age have been discovered.
Mostly the painted caves are of Mesolithic age mostly done with red and white color while some are of green and yellow color also. These colors were prepared by the pigment found in earth. Most of the paintings have been destroyed by rains sun and air in thousands of years. Even them lot of good painting were still there in good condition which are painted on the roof the walls of these caves.
These paintings can be divided into four ages one Mesolithic age:-100000-200000 B.C.
(2) Copper Stone Age-4000-2500 B.C.
(3) Early historic age- 2500-1500 B.C.
(4) Later historic age- 1500-700 B.C.
Paintings are mostly of Mesolithic age in which elephant, Rhinoceros, bear, wild bear, cow, bullock, buck, dear and crabs are also painted. These are some themes also in which dance, dresses ornaments mother and child, drinking party, hunting scenes and folk dance are painted. Later paintings the processions on horses. Through these paintings the primitive hunter man has not only successfully expressed his motion but also mysteriously nature and his struggle for existence against the ferocious animals of the jungles.
